New Zealand's Nuclear Free Zone Legislation was an important part of it's history, and a defining moment for it's national identity. The anti-nuclear stance was a controversial one as New Zealanders were so passionate about a change in policy, as the protested and paraded for an anti-nuclear legislation to be signed. This controversy didn't end at protests, but continued on in parliament as National and Labour held conflicting views on the nuclear issue. Once the legislation was finally signed in 1987, it had many repercussions, one of which was a chill in relations with the US- a relationship that even today hasn't recovered.
